John Andrews Spracklin (Sr.) His Estate!

John Andrews Spracklin died 6 February 1862.

He was living with his daughter Lydia in 1860 according to the U.S. Federal Census.

John A. Spracklin did not have a will.  There was a probate process.

The photo of the index below, shows father, John Andrews Spracklin SR, and son, John Andrews Spracklin JR, on the same page.  You would need to see the headings of the page to understand what the volumes and the pages mean.  It was dark and difficult to read.  I have tried to lighten up the page but it is still fuzzy.

Helpful Books for courthouse research:  ”Courthouse Research for Family Historians, Your Guide to Genealogical Treasures,” by Christine Rose.  Also her:  ”Courthouse Indexes Illustrated.”

This last booklet helps to take the mystery out of the index books which can be very confusing.  You probably can find these two books in a genealogical society library or at a good-sized public library.

I find that doing probates/estates can be very confusing.  The films are not always easy to interpret and it is much easier to do this research when physically at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, because you can pull several films to work on.

The reference to vault films at the Family History Library means they are not housed at the library and have to be ordered in advance.  I usually do that about 2 weeks before I visit the Family History Library.

There are also what are called estate packets but they can be very hard to read because of the handwriting.  They are the file that houses the original documents.  I will talk about that in a future post.

John & Lydia (Goss) Spracklin Rest Peacefully in Green Valley

John and Lydia are both buried in Knox County, Ohio.  They rest peacefully in the Green Valley Cemetery situated a little northeast of Mount Vernon. It is a very lovely setting and well cared for.  It is not too far from their land.

I have had the good fortune to visit the cemetery twice once in 2007 and again in 2011.

We see that Lydia died January 19, 1851.  If you take her age and calculate the date with the Ancestry calculator it gives the birth date for Lydia as 8 June 1793.

The date I have for Lydia’s birth is 19 Jan 1796 in Dayton, Ohio.  There seems to be a difference of 3 years in her age?

The Ancestor Outline I have featured on this blog by Armindo Spracklin (wife of Charles E. Spracklin) gives her birth date as 8 June 1796.  This, of course, is not a  primary sources, so I am leaning toward her tombstone as the best source.

So far I have not been able to find any birth record for Lydia.  According to an article about  Solomon Goss Spracklin, a son,  Lydia was the first child born in Dayton, Ohio.  The other history books of Dayton and Montgomery County do not agree, they list a boy. http://iagenweb.org/harrison/bio/geneal13.htm#spracklen

Let’s take a look at my photographs of the tombstones and see what they reveal.  I have written about my travels in 2011 and Mt. Vernon in this blog.  See the posted dated September 11, 2011: Mt. Vernon County Seat – Knox Co., Ohio.

I did not blog about the trip in 2007.  I did mention it when I was starting to write the posts for the 2011 trip.  See the post dated July 13, 2011:  Remembering Ohio 2007. 

The drive from Mt. Vernon to the cemetery is lovely and very easy along a two lane road.  It is not too hard to find the cemetery it is right across from the white church.

The first time I visited this cemetery in 2007, I was with a cousin and it was pouring rain.  We returned the next day so we could enjoy the time there.  The second time I was there in 2011, the weather was wonderful and I was able to dally and walk the cemetery reading more of the tombstones.  Here is a little different perspective and you can see the blue sky:

Let’s get closer to see if we can figure out the dates and information on Lydia’s stone.  I believe it is January and not June for the month of her death.

Just so you know that I was really there, here I am in 2011, I would have had my arms around them all but they are too far apart for that:

Is there an obituary notice for John in the local newspapers.  Well, I have not been able to find one.  I have searched all of the Mt. Vernon newspapers with no results.  Here is what I searched at the Mt. Vernon Public Library in their microfilm reels of the newspapers of the area.   I have found a lot of missing issues in the newspapers in Ohio.  They do have abstracted publications of the vital records information from the newspapers and of course, I studied them for clues as well.

1. Tried the Democratic Banner Nov. 1847 to 1851 and 12/1851 for Lydia.
2. Wanted to find Noah Goss but the newspapers for Mt. Vernon at the Mt. Vernon Public Library did not cover 18 Jul 1833.
3. Tried the Ohio Times Jan 1850 to Aug 1852 for Lydia.
4. There were no dates for the Mt. Vernon Paper for 1863 when John died.

Wine Rood sells land to John Spracklin 1839

Who is this Wine Rood?  He cannot be the one that immigrated with John Spracklin to Washington Co., Ohio in 1817, because that Wine Rood, husband of Ann (Andrews) Rood, died in 1823 in Washington Co., Ohio.  He had a son Wine Rood Jr. could it be him?  John would have known him as a child.

There is no grave record for the son Wine Rood Jr. in Washington County that I know about, he is not buried with the family in Mound Cemetery.  Various online family trees have a Wine Rood dying in Wyandot Co., Ohio in 1870.  There is a Wine Rood buried in Burkes Cemetery on Find A Grave but there isn’t much detail.

An interesting biography of a George Rood in the History of Wyandot Co., Ohio 1884 appears on page 727:

This article states that this Wine Rood is the son of Ann and Wine Rood who immigrated in 1817.  It also mentions that his father had land in Marion and Hardin Counties. Apparently I have more research to do in those deeds under the R’s. I think it is the son.

Another interesting item about this deed between John Spracklin and Wine Rood (JR) is that a witness is named  John Kellar.  Is this the John Kellar that I seek who is the father of Elizabeth Keller, first wife of Daniel D. Spracklin, son of John and Lydia Spracklin?

John and Lydia Spracklin Expand Their Land Holdings 1835!

John Spracklin expanded his holdings to the Town of Amity in Pike Township. Amity is in the very southeastern corner of Pike.  Pike Township is in the north middle part of Knox Co.,  The lots are in Section 21 which is the very corner of Pike.  I drove right by there when I was traveling there in 2011.  I don’t think it is a recognized town anymore and when I was trying to find out more about it I would get other Amity’s in other locations, so be careful.

John and Lydia Spracklin settle on Solomon Goss Land in Knox Co., Ohio

John and Lydia settled on the land in Knox County, Ohio, purchased by Solomon Goss, Lydia’s father, from Zaccheus Biggs on 28 July 1802.

Mr. Biggs has a patent for land for Knox County at the BLM Land website as well as many others. On the patent it states that he obtained the land, “4000 acres, appropriated for satisfying Warrant for Military Service.”  The Biggs family was very busy in Ohio buying and selling land.  They were not the only ones.

The link below to the BLM will take you to the search page.  I used in my search, Ohio, Knox Co., and “Biggs.”  This search will get you to the patent Biggs had for Knox County.  It showed up at the bottom of the search page.  If you just search for Zaccheus Biggs you might not get the one you want.  Also be aware that they spell the name most creatively especially the first name in many abstracts and documents.

There is a deed at the Washington County Historical Society in Marietta in the stacks in books. It is down the hall and around the corner.  This society was given a great many records from their county courthouse so you may have to check with them for older records.

Zaccheus Biggs is selling 450 acres of land to Solomon Goss in 1802.  The deed is very hard to read and of course the book contained only a copy of the original deed handwritten by the court clerk. It was very faint in certain parts of the document where the ink had faded.

In 2007, I was traveling in the northern part of Ohio.  I had attended the FGS (Federation of Genealogical Societies) conference in Fort Wayne were the Allen County Library is located.  After that conference I headed east to Ohio which is about two hours to get to Kenton, Ohio and then another hour to Mt. Vernon, Ohio.  I couldn’t pass it up.  Knox County was part of Fairfield County till it broke off after this deed was written and recorded in March 1, 1808.

The Recorder of Deeds in Knox County is in the Records Center and they had this huge map of Knox County dated 1847.  Yes, before three of the townships were annexed to Morrow County which was established in 1848.  I purchased the large map for $5.00.  I do not know if they are still selling them?

The Knox County Genealogical Society is in the basement.  If you visit stop by.  Their hours are limited so check their website.

The deeds are on the main floor and the court records are in the basement of the Records Center near the genealogical society.

Lovely Courthouse but it is not where the records are!

Here is a portion of that map featuring the townships of Liberty and Bloomfield Twps. Remember South Bloomfield was part of Knox in 1847 but became part of Morrow County in 1848.  The area in yellow highlights the Spracklin land and a little more.

NOTE:  This map is not only important for Spracklin Research but for anyone who had family in Knox Co., Ohio in 1847.  This is also important to me for my John and Mary Keller research. The parents of Elizabeth Keller who married Daniel D. Spracklin a son of John and Lydia Spracklin.

Interesting stuff:  In the past I have mentioned Rufus Putnam and the deed above is signed by a Rufus Putnam. He was a Justice of the Peace in Washington County.  I visited his land in North Brookfield, Massachusetts where he lived before he left for Marietta, Ohio.  I visited Campus Martius and viewed the house that he lived in.  They had it indoors inside the museum to preserve it.  The land office building is outside this museum.  He knew the Goss family.  He knew Capt. Philip Goss and Judith and probably Philip Goss and Keziah Cooley.

John and Lydia Spracklin’s Life in Knox County, Ohio

In the last post, I used the tax and census records of Washington County, Ohio to get close to figuring out when Lydia stopped paying taxes in Washington County on the land in Knox County and came to conclusion that it happened about 1820.

Solomon Goss, her father, was on his own again on the land in Fearing Twp. in 1821.  Daniel Goss, the son and brother, appeared on the same page or not, depending on the year.  Solomon Goss (Jr) doesn’t appear till 1826. Solomon Goss (Jr) was to inherit the land.  I refer you to the post on the will of  Solomon Goss, dated December 2, 2012:  The Will of Solomon Goss 1810!

We do find John Spracklin in the 1830 U.S. Federal Census in Liberty Twp. which I presented below. There is a woman between the ages of 30-40 living with him.  I believe that it is reflecting three of their children:  Mary 6, Peter 4, and Solomon Goss is 2 years.

John Spracklin is listed as head 4th down from top. This is a statistical census and does not give the names of the family members living with him but it does give age ranges for male and female.

NOTE:  The comments following the numbers are my speculations, if you disagree that is okay with me.  Please comment if you have any thoughts.

1830 Peter and John Spracklin Appear

There is a listing for a Peter Spracklin in the 1830 U.S. Census living in Liberty Twp., Ohio. Peter is on the first line.   John Spracklin  is on the 4th line down.

Is this Peter the father or Peter the son?  Well I believe it is the father before he moves to Hardin County, Ohio and settles there.  The Peter who is John’s younger brother is living in Kensington, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania in 1830 with 11 people and will later migrate to Trenton, New Jersey.

I will post in the future about Peter and Elizabeth’s children. My focus is on John and Lydia then each one of their children. Here is a quick list of Peter and Elizabeth’s family:  John, Sarah, Mary, Elizabeth, Parmelia, Anna, Peter, Alfred and George.

I did  tax record research at the Ohio Historical Society on my trip in 2011 and found John Spracklin in Liberty Twp., in 1835, 1836, 1837.  When you look at the Tax Record films you get more detail.  There are two pages to these tax records.   This photo is page 1 and only a portion.

Caution:  These films were very difficult to read,  I was having trouble keeping the years correct.  I reviewed the film twice but still I am not happy with my recording of the data.  I would like to go back.

The most important part is the land description and it is the same one for all tax records for this time period for John Spracklin.  He adds more land in 1837 as he accumulates more.

In 1850 we finally get to a census that tells us something about the family.

Sadly this is the only census we see Lydia listed in.  She will die very soon in January of 1851.

So we know that John and Lydia (Goss) Spracklin migrated and settled on the land in Knox County, Ohio about 1820-1821 and raised their family.  The land in Knox County was bequeathed to Lydia in 1815 by her father Solomon Goss in a deed.  This land was to be bought and sold among the Spracklins, Goss and those families that married into these families.  The land was sold after the death of John in 1862 in deeds and in his estate papers.  More to come on John and Lydia (Goss) Spracklin.

John and Lydia (Goss) Spracklin Migrate to Knox Co., Ohio!

If you can’t use census you can try to see what the tax records tell you and study both comparing them.  Trying to find ancestors in early Ohio 1787 to 1840 is not easy.  I know because I have been studying Spracklin, Delano, Keller and other surnames to try and find family.

When did Lydia and John Spracklin migrate from Washington County, Ohio to Knox County, Ohio and settle on the land that her father Solomon Goss bequeath to his children?

During my trip to Ohio in August-September of 2011, I spent time at the Washington County Library Local History and Genealogy Annex where the genealogical library is located and staffed by volunteers of the Washington County Genealogical Society, who are members of the Ohio Genealogical Society.  These are great archives to visit and learn about for Ohio research.

They had original Treasurer’s duplicate journals for Washington County on a shelf under the window for access from 1810 to beyond 1836.

In these books were listings for taxes paid by Solomon Goss and his children. I did not have  a great deal of time so I did a rather poor job of photographing the pages of these books.

Much to my relief and saving me from my slovenly ways, the Family History Library, Familysearch.org has Ohio Tax Records for only a selected group of counties in Ohio:  Ashtabula, Belmont, Carroll, Columbiana, Guernsey, Harrison, Jackson, Jefferson, Monroe, Trumbull, Washington (other), and Washington, Waterford Township.  They say they are about 17% complete.

The photograph above is an example of the Treasurer’s Duplicates and the page is from the damaged book in between 1810 and 1825 in the picture of the books above. It is the brown looking item between these two larger books.

So I spent several hours studying what they had at Ancestry.com and online at Familysearch.org including the images.  Here are a few sources I used in preparation for my trip to Ohio in 2011, I am sure there are more.  (See Familysearch wiki on Ohio Taxation for more ideas – under Ohio Links on right side of this blog)

1. “Early Ohio Tax Records,” compiled by Esther Weygandt Powers, Akron, Ohio 1971.  I found it at the Seattle Public Library.  Google Books has a copy but it doesn’t have all the pages for it is only a preview.  Fortunately it worked for me and the book is readily available to photocopy.

2. World Vital Records has this as well “Early Ohio Tax Record: Reprinted with The Index to Early Ohio Tax Records.”  If you have a subscription to this online archive go check it out.  It is possible that your local genealogical society has access for members.

3. If you try Ancestry.com you may find some of the tax lists mixed in with the early U.S. Federal Census because some did not survive for 1790, 1800, 1810, 1820, so they used them to fill in for the missing U.S. Census.  If you do not have a subscription see your local library for a card.

State Census Records by Ann S. Lainhart is a good source for what census, state, federal and territorial were done for a given state like Ohio.  Worldcat had 929 hits for all 6 editions and at least 6 in my area.

William Dollarhide has a two volume set of books on Census and how to find them.  Census Substitute & State Census Records…” Volume 1 – Eastern States and Volume 2 – Western States, 2008, with Foreword by Leland K. Meitzler.

4. The Ohio Historical Society has Tax duplicates from 1806-1810 and 1809-1814, 1816-1838 on film at the historical society. If you go to their home page scroll down and click on the Archives/Library.  I was there in 2011 and looked at several of those films.  FHL films are from the Ohio Historical Society.

Caution:  They are rather difficult to read and not well identified by the years so you must take your time and take notes and copy carefully.  I had to do it twice to make sure I was recording the years correctly.  The research I did was on Spracklin, Delano and Keller surnames.

5. Familysearch.org has “Tax Records of Ohio, 1801-1814 a series of microfilm.  They also have “Index of the Ohio 1825 and 1835 Tax duplicate,” in book form compiled by Gerald M. Petty, 1981, FHL Book #977.1R42, there is an 1812 version on 5 films.

This is a copy of one of the Familysearch tax records and only a piece of it.

NOTE:  Elizabeth is married to Andrew Lake so she is not at home, Noah is about 38 years old, Mary is about 35 years old, Solomon Goss (Jr)  inherits the land in Fearing and married in 1812 to Polly Devol, Daniel lives in Belpre and is married to Lydia in 1813, Levi Goss is in New York or Ontario, Canada.  He was in the War of 1812.  He is about 27 years old.  See my posts about these children of Solomon Goss.

My notes:  The male sections are not as detailed as the females so it makes it hard to figure out who they might be.  Here I try seeing who might fit the numbers.  What do you think?

Maybe that is John Spracklin the one who is not Naturalized and that is why we don’t find him in the 1820 Census?

The rest of the children disappear after the 1820 U.S. Census and Daniel Goss continues through many years and eventually we see that Daniel moves to Belpre and is no longer listed with the Knox Co., lands.  Each of the children:  Elizabeth, Noah, Mary, Daniel, Levi sell their lands to someone else or a family member.  Lydia is the only one that keeps her 50 acres of the Knox Co. lands.

In the above chart we see the shift taking place.  Solomon Goss dies in 1825 and his son Solomon Goss (Jr) moves onto the land in Fearing Twp., stays there till about 1832 and sells the land and moves to Hardin Co., Ohio.  Daniel and Elizabeth are the only children that stay behind in Washington Co., Ohio. Lydia and John Andrews Spracklin Family

John Andrews Spracklin immigrated to the United States in 1817 and two years later he married in 1819 to Lydia Goss, daughter of Solomon Goss and Olive (Scott) Goss.

Lydia and John Andrews Spracklin had nine (9) children.

What follows below is a summary of their family.  I will present more information on what I know of each family in later posts and give sources in more depth.

1.  Alfred Spracklin, no further information or burial site found.  It is possible he was born in Washington Co., Ohio?  I did look for him when I was there but I was unable to locate a grave.  I did not find a record for his burial in Knox County either.

2.  Ida Spracklin is buried in the Green Valley Cemetery, in Knox Co., Ohio next to her parents.  The tombstone information reads:  6/7/18?? a. 10 y.  If we base her birth on the birth of her sister Mary, we might place her death around 1822 or 1823  1832-33?

3.  Mary G. Spracklin was born in 1824 in Knox Co. and died 25 August 1905 in Liberty Twp., Knox Co., Ohio.  She married 20 May 1852 to a Henry Glancy b. 1803 and died 20 May 1891.  Henry may have been married twice before and one of the wives was named Abigail Mason whom he married on 30 August 1846.

4.  Peter John Spracklin was born 29 January 1826 in Knox Co., Ohio and died 6 May 1899 in Belle Plaine, Benton Co., Iowa.  He is buried in the Wright Cemetery in Belle Plaine.  I had him as Peter D. Spracklin?

He first married Mariah Brokaw (Brocaugh has a variety of spellings) 20 June 1851 in Morrow Co., Ohio.  She was born 21 Feb, 1831 in Ohio and died 29 July 1855 in Belle Plaine, Benton Co., Iowa.  She is also buried in the Wright Cemetery.

Peter married a 2nd time to Catherine Snyder Russell on 25 October 1857 in Benton Co., Iowa.  She was born 27 January 1837 and died on 29 March 1913, Chadron, Dawes Co., Nebraska.  Peter had 2 children with Mariah and 9 children with Catherine.

5.  Solomon Goss Spracklin was born 4 March 1828 in Knox Co., Ohio and died 4 September 1909 in Modale, Harrison Co., Iowa.  He is buried in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Harrison Co., Iowa.  He married Louisa Jane Avetts on 2 April 1857 in Johnson Co., Iowa. She was born 26 May 1839 in Nashville, Davidson, Tennessee and died 14 December 1928 in Missouri Valley, Harrison Co., Iowa.  She is buried in Rose Hill Cemetery.   Solomon and Louisa had nine (9) children.  This family has been thoroughly researched by a cousin who is a descendant.

6.  Daniel D. Spracklin 16 Feb 1830 – my 2nd Great Grandfather.  I have shared about Daniel in my blog:  The Barclays of Pine River in the posts dated November and December 2011.  The Barclay blog is where I discuss the life of his daughter Amarilla Spracklin my great-grandmother.  Some Spracklin researchers spell Daniel’s middle name as “Dair” and others spell it “Dare.”  I have seen it both ways.  I have never seen where by 2nd great grandfather has spelled is middle name.  He always used “D.D. Spracklin” or Daniel D. Spracklin.

Daniel was married twice 1st to Elizabeth Keller in 1852 and they had four children including Amarilla.

 He married again a second time to Sarah Blacketer Allgood in 1863 and they had seven children.  Sarah and Daniel are buried in the Community Cemetery 11 miles west of Millersburg. See  ”BJM’s Cemetery Discoveries” blog for the Community Cemetery and for the Titler Cemetery.

7.  Olive Elizabeth Spracklin born 25 July, 1833 probably in Knox Co., Ohio.  She died in Nebraska on 18 March, 1892.  She first married a Samuel McNutt and he probably died sometime before 1876 in Benton Co., Iowa.  She then remarried to a Wm. P. Merrifield who was born about 1829. I believe she is buried in the Table Rock Cemetery in Nebraska.

8.  John Andrews Spracklin (Jr.) was born 1835 in Knox Co., Ohio.  This son of John and Lydia is usually confused with his father.  To make it even more confusing they died within months of each other.  John is not called “Jr.” to my knowledge but I am using this to separate him from his father.  John Andrews Spracklin (Jr.) died on the 19th of June 1863 at Vicksburg (Walnut Hills), Warren, Mississippi.  He was a soldier in the Civil War and died of a head wound.  I have a great deal of information on John and his wife Drusila (Drucilla) Elizabeth Wolverton.  John and Drusila married 3 November 1855 in Knox. Co., Ohio.  Drusila died 26 September 1875 in Knox. Co., Ohio but I have not been able to find a burial site for her.  She is said to have been buried in Green Valley Cemetery near Mt. Vernon, Ohio where John and Lydia are buried, but I have not found a publication that lists a tombstone for her.  I walked the cemetery on my visit in 2011 but came up with no burial for her.  John and Drusila had three children.

9.  Lydia Spracklin was born 24 January 1838 and died 7 November 1902 in Table Rock, Pawnee Co., Nebraska.  She is buried in the Table Rock Cemetery.  She might have married first to Samuel Sharpneck on 21 June 1855 in Knox. Co., but I have not found anything else out about him.  She married for the 2nd time to Richard Kenner, an Englishman, on 9 September 1856 in Knox. Co.  He was born 16 February 1829 (Jan. 20, 1829 per his tombstone) in Devonshire, England and died 6 May 1901 in Table Rock and is buried in Table Rock Cemetery.  They had three children.  Lydia and Richard took care of the senior John Andrews Spracklin at the end of his life per the 1860 census.

In future posts I will share further information on these children of John and Lydia (Goss) Spracklin.

Trying to pin down John and Lydia’s movements in the early 1820′s in Ohio has not been easy. So far this is the earliest that I can place them in Knox County, Ohio.

Finding John in the 1820 Ohio census or other locations has failed, my theory is that he living with Wine Rood, his uncle by marriage, at the time. The possibility that John was in Virginia has been suggested by an online researcher at one of the message boards.

I did a little poking around but did not find anything on John in the deeds and tax records for Wood Co., Virginia, the area right across from Marietta.  It does suggest that it might be a good idea to study Virginia for more information.

Here are the sources I studied and my findings so far for John Andrews Spracklin in Virginia:

Results for  John Spracklin on films searched in Wood Co. for John Spracklin. Does not mean he wasn’t there just did not find him in these sources.

Personal Property Tax Lists 1801-1850 for Wood Co., West Virginia and found no trace of John Spracklin in FHL#2026409.  I looked at 1823.

Also checked deeds for Wood Co. West Virginia FHLs #577161 and 577167 – Grantee and Grantor Indexes 1798-1935. 

We do find John in the 1830 U.S. Federal Census in  Liberty Twp.  There is a woman between the ages of 30-40 living with him.

John Spracklin is listed as head 4th down from top. This is a statistical census and does not give the names of the family members living with him but it does give age ranges for male and female.

under age of 5 – lists 3 
10-15 – lists 1
20-30 – lists 1 
40-50 – lists 1 – John himself?
Females:
5 to 10 – lists 1
30-40 – lists 1 – This is probably Lydia

John Andrew Spracklin – From England to Ohio 1817

John Andrews Spracklin is my 3rd great-grandfather and the husband of Lydia Goss.  I promised a cousin that I would post about his immigration from England to the United States.  I dedicate this post to my half cousin Janice.

The surname of Spracklin can be spelled in a variety of creative ways.  I know that other’s spell it “Spracklen,” with an “e” instead of an “i.”  These spellings make it hard to research the Spracklins and have to try different approaches to dig for records.

I have seen:  Spraklin, Sprancklin, Spranklin, Sprackling, Sprocklin, Spracklan

My quest to find the actual passenger list for John Andrews Spracklin’s migration to the U.S., started at the Family History Library when I visited there for the first time in 2004. This was before Ancestry.com had these indexes online so you had to do things the hard way, like look in a book.  I targeted the published indexes for passenger arrivals in the United States.  I started in the reference section of the Family History which is located on each floor by the desk area.  I hope with all the changes at the Family History Library it is still there.

I started with this book:

Bentley, Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc. 1986, page 683 column left side lists:  Sprocklin, John – Abigail 3 Oct. 1817. The call number for this book at the FHL is #974.811 W3.  

The next step was to turn to pg. xvii in the front of this book.  This gives the film roll numbers for the National Archives Microfilm.

NARA Films

The NARA films are M425 series, #25, Sept. 1- Dec. 26, 1817 Lists #161-288. The FHL number is #419599 (#25), under Passenger Lists of Vessels, Philadelphia, #00205 for the Brig Abigail dated 3 Oct. 1817.

The next step is to find the films for NARA at the Family History Library using their film numbers.  So you run a search for these films

The definition of a Brig is a “two-masted, square-rigged ship with an additional gaff sail on the mainmast.”  I hope this picture is close, for I know nothing of sailing vessels:

I pulled this film from the FHL microfilm stacks on the 2nd floor and scrolled to the actual ships manifest.  Unfortunately it was very faded and difficult to read.

 Brig Abigail, William Grants is Master, Cargo was taken at Bristol., England, burthen 455, bound for Philadelphia. 

When I studied the ships manifest, I first thought that John Andrews Spracklin, my 3rd great-grandfather had come all by himself to the U.S.  I was reviewing the manifest one day and realized that he came with his Aunt Anne Andrews Rood and her family.  Anne is the sister to Elizabeth Andrews Spracklin wife of Peter Spracklin.  These are John’s parents who would come in 1823 to the U.S.

Are any of the other listed passengers other than the Roods on the manifest related?  I do not know at this time.

This process took maybe 1 hour at the FHL on that day.  Today at Ancestry.com and FamilySearch you can find this ships manifest in under 5 minutes and the copy, although still faded,  is much easier to read.

The first time I saw this ships manifest it was pretty amazing to see John’s name listed there.  Well, it still is amazing!

Lydia Goss marries an Englishman from Somerset!

I return to my third great grandmother and her story.

Lydia Goss  married on 19 July 1819 in Washington County, Ohio to John Andrews Spracklin an Englishman from Somerset County, England.

There are other sources of compiled marriages indexes for Ohio that I have consulted and you might run into them:

1.  Washington County, Ohio Marriages 1789-1840 pg. 36 for Delano, pg. 37-38 Devol., pg. 56 Goss, pg. 119-120 for Scott, pg. 128 Spraklin.  Compiled by Bernice Graham & Elizabeth Cottle and sponsored by the Marietta Chapter of the DAR and the Washington Co. Historical Society, Genealogical Publishing Co., 1976.   This book is pretty widely distributed.

2.  Washington Co., Ohio Marriages 1789-1822, by Robert D. Craig.  I found a copy at the Fiske Genealogical Library in Seattle.  He spells John’s last name “Spranklin.”

3.  Ohio Marriages, Recorded in County Courts Through 1820: An Index, by Jean Nathan, Chairman, Ohio Genealogical Society, 1996.  On page 278 you will find Delano and Dillinse, pages 405-406 Goss, and Rood is on page 889.

The above pedigree outline was featured in a past post.  I repeat a portion of it here specifically showing John and Lydia’s information.  This is the document that started me on my quest to learn more about this family.  It was given to me by my Aunt Miriam, my dad, Keith’s sister.  The complete full outline is featured in the post dated August 5, 2011 – see Archive list on the right of this blog.

Washington County Courthouse, Ohio

On my trip to Ohio in 2011, I stopped at the Washington County Courthouse in Marietta to look at the records.  I shared that experience in a past post.  I feature the same photo of me checking out the probate records in their special record room.

These are not original journals but copies of the originals.   They had probate, marriage and a lot more in this room.  They took me to the room and left me to do my work.  The advantage is that you have the opportunity to look at a variety of records and search out more individuals, which I did.  They had finding aid books by name that helped to locate the records.  The Washington Co. Historical Society has many original court records. So check both the courthouse and the historical Society.

I did look up John and Lydia’s marriage record and others and it was a photocopy of the original journal and also looked just like the microfilm I listed above.

So where did the actual marriage take place?  Solomon Goss her father was on the land in Fearing Twp. by 1819.  Did she marry there or did she marry in Marietta?  This would imply that they married so John could be close to his relatives the Roods?  Did she marry at her sister Elizabeth Lake’s home in the Rainbow area northwest of Marietta?  Fun to speculate?
