Which Henry Glancy did Mary G. Spracklin Marry in 1852?

Things weren’t adding up for the Henry Glancy in Milford Twp., Knox County, Ohio as the husband of Mary G. Spracklin daughter of John and Lydia (Goss) Spracklin. That Henry was 47 years old and Mary G. would be about 26 years old in 1850.  Not to mention the fact that Abigail was still living in 1850, 1860, 1870 per the census.  So there has to be another Henry Glancy of a much younger age.

Let’s see if we can get some further information from the U.S. Census.

In 1850 we find a Henry Glancy and Abigail living in Milford Twp., Knox Co., Ohio.

Line 13, 1211/1223 H. S. Glancy 47 age, Male, Cooper, $200, born in PA

Abigail age 45, F, born in PA, cannot read and write and over 20 years old

Margarett, age 14, F, born in PA

Martha age 12, F, born in PA

David age 8, M, born in Ohio

M. Elizabeth, age 6, F, born in Ohio.

On line 28, 1213/1225 is  James Glancy, age 22, M, Labourer, born in PA, married to Sarah P. age 20, F. born in Ohio.

Notes:  We see that he is 45 years old and Abigail is alive in 1850.  James was born about 1828 and about 1842 Henry came to Knox County, Ohio it you use Martha and David’s age to get an estimate of when this Henry came to Knox County, Ohio.

In the 1860 U.S. Federal Census for Milford Twp., Knox Co., Ohio, 7 August, 1880, PO Mildfordton page 44.

Line 13, 317/319 Henry Glancy age 58, M, Farmer, $1500/$800 now he is born in Ohio?

Abigail Glancy, age 55, F, born in Ohio

David, age 18, M, born in Ohio

The U.S. Federal Census has him still living in Milford Township, Knox Co., Ohio, 2 July 1870, P.O. Box:  Milforton, page 26.

Line 27, 201/144, Glancy, Henry T, age 68, Male, Married, Cooper, $350/$200, born in Ohio

Glancy, Abigail, age 65, Female, M, keeps house, born in PA

Remember in the last post I shared a marriage record of a Henry Glancy who married a Mary Fraker in 1875. Let’s take a look at the 1880 census for Milford Twp., Knox Co., Ohio.

1880 Milford Twp. under Julius Cornell - Henry and Mary Glancy

1880 Milford Twp. under Julius Cornell – Henry and Mary Glancy

Line 20 175/180 Cornell, Julius, white, male, age 44, married, labourer, born Ohio, parents Ohio

Cornell Adaline, white, female, age 41, wife, married, keeping house, born Ohio, parents Vermont and Massachusetts.

Cornell, Daniel white, male, age 18, son, single, laborer, Ohio

Cornell, Lucy, white, female, age 13, daughter, single, at school, Ohio

Cornell, Ernest, white, male, age 14, son, single, labour, Ohio

Cornell, Eugene, white, male, age 9, son, Ohio

Cornell, Herman, white, male, age 5, son, Ohio

Glancy, Henry, white male age 78, married, Cooper, born in Ohio, father VA and mother PA.

Glancy, Mary, white, female, age 33, wife, married, keeping house, born PA, parents PA.

The Mary listed with him is probably the Mary Fraker who is age 33 in this 1880 US census.  She is a very much younger Mary than Mary G. Spracklin.  See the marriage information given in the last post on this couple.  Mary G. would be about 56 years old in 1880.

I do not know the relationship of the Cornell family to Henry and Mary?

Another Henry Glancy Found in Knox County, Ohio

Now let’s look at another 1850 U.S. Census for Jefferson Twp., Knox Co., Ohio, 18 October 1850.  We find a Thomas Glancy living nearby with a younger Henry Glancy that is likely to fit the Henry that married our Mary G. Spracklin in 1852.

Line 12, 3144/3212 Thomas Glancy, age 45, M, Farmer, born Penn

Henry Glancy, age 22, M, farmer, born PA

Margaret Glancy, age 19, F, born Ohio

Sarah Glancy, age 16, F, born Ohio

Sybil Glancy, age 14, F, born Ohio

I am not a Glancy researcher so I do not know for sure if Thomas Glancy is a brother to the Henry Glancy in Milford Twp.  My interest is in what happened to Mary G. Spracklin. The manuscript I found indicates this is true but there seems to be some inconsistency with the online boards and trees I have found on the Glancy lineage.  I will let you do your own exploring.

Now Jefferson Township is in the northeast corner of Knox on the other side of the county from Liberty Twp. where John and Lydia live.  Mt. Vernon is the center of all things in Knox County, and John Spracklin has lots in the city, so they could have met there.  You can see that Milford Twp. is below Liberty.

Marion County Ohio - Montgomery over on the west side next to Hardin County.

We do a little more census work and we take a look at the 1860 census we have a Henry  and Mary Glancy living in Montgomery Twp., Marion Co., Ohio.

Line 27, ____/818 Henry Glancy age 34, Male, Farmer, $200 born Ohio

Mary Glancy, age 36, Female born Ohio.

This couple is about the right age for Mary G. Spracklin (born about 1824) and Henry Glancy (born about 1826).

Unfortunately, I have not been able to find this couple in Marion Co, Ohio, in later years.  I tried searching Montgomery Twp., in 1870 and 1880 but found no Henry Glancy.  I scrolled through page by page.  I checked the online Marion Co., Ohio probate index at FamilySearch and did not find a Henry Glancy listed.

Montgomery Twp. is over on the western side of Marion on the border with Hardin Co., Ohio and not real close to Liberty Twp., Knox Co., Ohio.  The other interesting thing is that they have no children listed and if they married in 1852 there was time to have some by 1860.

When I was looking for them I stumbled on George Spracklin (wife Rachel) a son of Alfred Spracklin and grandson of Peter Spracklin father of John A. Spracklin and Alfred.  George was living in the same Montgomery Twp., Marion Co., Ohio when this Mary G. and Henry Glancy were there?  Montgomery Twp. is on the west side of Marion County next door to Hardin County, where Peter and Elizabeth Spracklin settled.  This couple would be Mary G.’s grandparents.   Peter had died in 1845 and Elizabeth (Betty) in November of 1860.  The 1860 U.S. Census for Montgomery Twp. was enumerated in July of 1860.

I am leaning toward this Henry Glancy in Montgomery Twp., Marion Co., Ohio. Mary and Henry Glancy had to be close by in the 1850’s and 1860’s because they did sell land to Daniel D. Spracklin in 1852, a son of John and Lydia (Goss) Spracklin.  A Henry and Mary Glancy sold more land in 1863.  These two deeds were part of the estate of John Spracklin. I will post about these deeds soon.

Lessons learned:  I am feeling sort of silly about this whole situation with Mary G. Spracklin.  If I had studied the census for Milford Twp. when I found the Henry Glancy estate file in Knox Co., I would have learned so much earlier in my research that there was something not adding up regarding the marriage of Mary G. Spracklin to Henry Glancy in 1852.  I would have realized that the Henry Glancy in Milford Twp., was too old for Mary G.  and that he was married to this Abigail well past the marriage dates given and the information found in the census.  It is so easy to get sidetracked or to not focus on the research.

I have a copy of the Henry Glancy estate file for Milford Twp., Knox Co., Ohio  and I will be sharing it so you will see that his wife was named Mary in 1891.
