Eliza Keller, what was her fate?

Eliza Keller is now on her own after the death of her husband Peter Keller.  She has several small children to care for and raise.  She is living close to Peter’s parents John and Mary Keller and a  sibling of Peter’s in 1870. Her parents are living near by as well.

The 1870 U.S. Census lists Eliza Keller but no Peter.

Source:  1870 U.S. Census, So. Bloomfield, Morrow Co., Ohio, pg. 21, Post Office: Sparta, July 13, 1870, by Perry M. [Morris].

Line 19 175/174 Keller, Eliza 31, F, keeping house, 1200/250, born Ohio; Isabel age 12, female, at home, born Ohio; Jessie, age 9 male, born Ohio; Andrew, age 5 male, born Ohio; Anna age 5, female, born in Ohio.

177/181 Keller, John Jr. 25, male farmer 800/256 Ohio; [Lovina], 21, female, keeping house, born Ohio.

A very interesting event occurs by the 1880 U.S. Federal Census.  We find Eliza still living in Morrow County but she has a different last name.

Eliza as Denzer?

Eliza as Denzer?

1880 U.S. Federal Census, So. Bloomfield, Morrow Co., Ohio, pg. 9, SD 5, ED 133, Sheet A. 348.

103/107 Mary Anne Keller age 66, widowed, keeping house, born in Ohio, father born in New York, mother born in Vermont. Keller, William F., son age 24, farmer, born in Ohio, father born in Pennsylvania, mother born in Ohio. It looks like Eliza remarried but where is the husband, Mr. Denzer? In this census Eliza’s parents are living with her.  Mr. Denzer is very mysterious.

Eliza’s mother Elizabeth sells land to Henry Keller on the 28th of March, 1882.

Source: Deeds, Morrow Co., Ohio, Vol. 36, pg. 34, FHL#1928220. Have we found a possible brother by the name of Elisha or is that her father.  I am leaning toward this Elisha as being a brother because father would be listed on this deed with Elizabeth as the wife.  This is not the case.  I have not done any searching for the Evertts family which needs to be done.

Peter served in the Civil War for a brief time and in 1890 Eliza shows up in the special census that was done in 1890.  Someday, I just might get Peter’s Civil War service and pension file to see what it will reveal if anything, they cost a lot now but maybe I can get some help.

Eliza appears on the 189o Special Schedule, Surviving Soldiers, Sailors and Marines, Widows etc. S.D. 5, ED 229, Bennington Twp. Eliza is listed on line 39:  172/194 Eliza A. widow of Keller Peter, Rank, Private, Company, A, Name of Regmt.,  142, Ohio, N. ls, Date of Enlistment, 12 May 1864, Date of Discharge 1 Sept 1864,  Length of Service – 3, 20.

Tracking Eliza further she is still in Morrow Co., Ohio in the 1900 U.S. Federal Census.

Source:  1900 U.S. Census, Sparta Village, SD13, ED 107, Sheet 10, Thomas F. Leonard 27th Day of June, 1900. This time she is using her Keller name and her mother is listed as head.

There is a tombstone at Find A Grave featured in the Fairview Cemetery in Galion, Crawford Co., Ohio plot: Section 11, that has an Eliza Keller name, if this is truly her she lived a long life dying at age 68.  Unfortunately online indexes start in 1908 so I have not been able to find a death record for her.
