The Rev. Alfred and Abigail Spracklin’s children: Caroline Spracklin and family.

Caroline Spracklin was born about 1841 in Ohio to Alfred and Abigail Spracklin. Caroline appears in the 1850 census with her parents at 9 years of age.  She is also with them in the 1860 census at 19 years old.

Caroline in mentioned in the estate file of her father Alfred Spracklin as Rinebarger.  You will find the information about that estate in past posts on this blog.

There is a Caroline or Cathrine M. Spracklin marrying a William Henry English in Hardin Co., Ohio on 4 January, 1862 per online indexes.  William was born in 1839 in Hancock Co., Ohio.

According to the Death Index for Ohio, William died 15 July, 1870 and he is buried in the Spencerville Cemetery in Allen Co., Ohio. Find A Grave has a memorial for him with a tombstone.  The census is enumerated in August but the tombstone says he died in July so this needs to be confirmed. Allen County is one county west of Hardin County.

Another marriage is listed in the Ohio Marriage Index for a Caroline M. English on 21 January, 1877 to a John Rinebarger in Van Wert Co., Ohio, FHL#1015860.  The surname of Rhineberger has several different spellings so be aware as we see below.

Caroline and John Rheinburger appear in the 1880 census in Montgomery Twp., Marion Co., Ohio. Byron Kilourne and Mary are next door to them. Mary Kilbourne is Ann and Silvanus Cook’s daughter.

In the 1890 U.S. Special Schedule of Surviving Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines and Widows there is a Caroline M. Rensberger listed as widow of Wm. H. English in the Montgomery Twp., Marion Co., Ohio.  William was in the 135th Regmt, Ohio Infantry (National Guard), Co. H, Private.  He enlisted 2 May 1864.  This means there maybe a Civil War service record and pension for this man.

William H. English and Caroline Spracklin had the following children:

–Fremont Ellsworth English born 9 August, 1862 LaRue, Marion Co., Ohio and died 10 October 1929 and is buried in the Riverside Cemetery in Marion County.  Find A Grave has a memorial for him. He married either Estelle or a Mattie.

Ida English was born about 1864 and she appears in the census with her parents in 1870 and then in 1880 she is with her mother and step-father.

–Cora or Clara E. English was born about 1866 and died 10 October, 1868. There is a burial in the Spencerville Cemetery in Allen Co., Ohio that might be her per Find A Grave who has a memorial for her.  Her mother states below in the 1900 census that she had 5 children born and 5 are living?

Mabell English was born April 1870.

Caroline and John Rinberger had at least one child an Emery Rineberger born about 1876. He appears in the 1880 census with his uncle Lucius Spracklin.  This census is very difficult to read. Why he is with his uncle is unclear and again the year is stated as 1866 but this is not correct because of their marriage was given as 1877.

In 1900 Caroline is in Marion Co., Ohio as a widow and living alone:

Line 16, 312, 239, Rinebarger, Caroline, Head, W, F, May 1841, 59 Widowed five children born, five living, born Ohio, father England, Mother New Jersey, yes, yes, yes, R. H.

Source: Caroline Rinebarger Family, 1900 U.S. Federal Census, La Rue Town, Montgomery Twp., Marion Co., Ohio. SD#12, ED#66, Sht#14, 26, June 1900 Grant Bain.  Caroline says she has 5 children living so I may not have them all or this is not correct.

Caroline Rineberger died on 8 July, 1902 in La Rue, Marion Co., Ohio. I assume she is buried in a nearby cemetery but so far a listing is not appearing online.

Well as usual there are many questions and confusions in the records so all the above will need to be double checked and verified.  It would be nice to know where she is buried and if there is an obituary notice.  The location of the other graves needs to be verified that they are the correct person.
