Lucius Alfred Spracklin was a son of Alfred and Abigail Cooper Spracklin. I have seen where his names were switched and he was Alfred Lucius. Lucius appears in the 1860 and 1870 census with his parents living in Dudley Twp., Hardin Co., Ohio.
Lucius was born on 19 August, 1851 in Hardin Co., Ohio. Alfred was migrating from Richland to Hardin Co. and he might just have made it to Hardin by then. I have deeds and things that show his migration. However, I still think we need to verify all these children’s births with county records before we are sure.
Lucius married Sarah A. McClearen a daughter of William McClearen and Susan Ann Shanks. Sarah was born in Dudley Twp., Hardin Co., Ohio. They married on 10 November, 1872 in Hardin County. Source: Marriage Records of Hardin Co. Ohio, Books 1 -10 1833 to 1899, Hardin Co. Genealogical Society. Sarah’s last name is spelled a variety of different ways.
Lucius A.l Spracklin was involved with a suit on 29 February, 1876 regarding the Estate of a Daniel Lear. This suit included R.A. Powelson, W. Hampton. L.A. Spracklin as defendants. Source: Pages 435-436, Dudley Twp., Docket Book 1863-1877 Book part 2, Hardin Co. Genealogical Society. I have not obtained a copy of this court case at this time.
On November 8, 1878 he was part of a deed involving the partition of the lands of his father Alfred Spracklin. This deed was included in a past post about Alfred’s estate on this blog. Lucius acted as an appraiser regarding his father’s estate.
Lucius and George were the grantee’s in a deed regarding the Estate of Alfred. Sarah L. Austin and Mary Buttery sold their share back to their uncles in September of 1879. I have included this deed in a very interesting past post about these two descendants of Alfred.
Lucius and Sarah are living in Dudley Twp., in the 1880 census. Why Emery Rhineberger is with him is not known. He would be sister Caroline’s son.

There is an estate for Lucius Alfred Spracklin in the Hardin County Estate Records Index but the documents are not online at this time. To obtain copies you would have to go to the courthouse or check with the Hardin Co. Genealogical Society who was given a lot of probate records at the time of my visit to Ohio in 2007. This estate would assist in defining the children and heirs of Lucius Alfred Spracklin.

I hope I have all the right children with the right parents, if not just let me know for Lucius and Sarah Spracklin, it has been very difficult to figure out. I also do not have pictures of their tombstones in Otterbein Cemetery which is just down the road from Lee. Sigh!
Summary of Alfred and Abigail Spracklin’s Family research:
As usual studying a family and learning about them only creates more questions that need answers. My research on Alfred and Abigail’s family is certainly not done. To get a really good grasp of this family serious estate research needs to be done and more digging into land records, court records, seeking obituaries and more. I feel that I would need to return to Ohio and with the new information that I have found, dig in more on Alfred’s family.
I have visited Rivercliff and Grove Cemeteries before looking for Keller family and would have to go back with a thorough search for Spracklin family. It would mean expanding the research in Richland, Seneca, Crawford, Marion and more of the counties and I really would love to find United Brethren records at county level. Sigh!
If you are a descendant of the Rev. Alfred and also Abigail please leave a comment and share. My thanks to Eric for the pictures of the George Peter Spracklin family.
