Philip and Hannah (Darby) Goss’s children: Philip Goss and Huldah Wandel, his wife

This Philip Goss was born 29 March 1787 in Huntington Twp. to Philip Goss Jr/V and Hannah Darby.  He probably was born in Huntington Twp., because events had settled down in Luzerne Co., by that time. Luzerne County had been established and some effort was being made to solve the land issues till that fell apart. On the whole things were getting better in Luzerne County.

Several years ago, a cousin, said that she gave up doing genealogical research on the Goss family because there were too many Philip Goss’s.  Well, I don’t blame her; however, with the help of Paul Henry Goss and Flora Osborn in the 1930-1960’s this lineage was researched and figured out. So far I have not found that it is incorrect.

Here is a quick review of the Philip Goss’s of our line:

  1. Philip Goss born about 1652 and died 1698 – Considered the 1st Philip Goss in the Colonies.  He married 1st Hannah Hopkins, 2nd) Mary Prescott and the father of:
  2. Philip Goss born 1676 and who married Judith Hayward. He was known as Capt Philip Goss, and the father of:
  3. Philip Goss born about 1700-1705 and married Keziah Cooley and he was the father of
  4. Philip Goss IV b. 1724 and who married Mary Kendall. I have posted about this couple in full on this blog. They were the parents of
  5. Philip Goss V b. 1745 and marred Hannah Darby, parents of
  6. Philip Goss VI b. 1787 and who married Hulda Wandel.

I have yet to write about the first three Philips on this blog and will in future posts.  I have touched on them in past posts but not in-depth as I would like to do.

This post is about Philip Goss VI.  Eventually he would also be called Junior sometime around 1820 onward.

Philip Goss married a Huldah Wandel or Olive Hulda or Huldah Olive and they had maybe 14 children some think 16 children.  According to Find A Grave Huldah was born 22 Feb 1792 in Pennsylvania which means she would be 18 in 1810.

Huldah’s parents were a John Wandel b. 1749 in Fishkill, Dutchess, New York and he died 12 February 1826 in Huntington Twp. He is buried in the Benscoter Cemetery in Hunlock, Luzerne Co., PA. He married Mary Mertle Fish who is also buried in the Benscoter Cemetery but there is no information about her birth or death.

Philip Goss 6th appears in the August 7, 1820 in Huntington Twp. Luzerne Co., PA. The family has 14 members at this time. It looks like Philip and Hannah were living with their son?  When I insert a name after a category I am guessing or looking for trends.

In 1870 Philip Goss appears in the US Federal Mortality Schedule. Phillip Goss, male, white, married, born about 1786 in Pennsylvania, age 84, died Apr 1870 of consumption in Luzerne Co., PA.  I am not finding Huldah in 1870 on her own or living with her children?

Philip Goss died on 1 April 1870 and is buried in the Pine Grove Cemetery a little southeast of Harvveyville. Huldah died 22 July 1877 and is also buried in this cemetery. This is according to Find A Grave.

PINE GROVE CEMETERY

I visited Pine Grove Cemetery in 2008 when I was in Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, I did not get a picture of Philip and Hannah’s grave stone(s) because I did not know they were buried there. The Northeastern Pennsylvania published Cemetery book for Pine Grove did not list them. Which I find odd.

Pine Grove Cemetery in Luzerne Co., PA

In any event, this cemetery is near Harveyville, in Huntington Twp. It is very easy to find. There are more Goss buried here but I will return to this cemetery at a later date.

These are the only Goss Listed in the burial published records for Pine Grove in Luzerne Co.
