In this post, I will write about Samuel Goss and son of the Rev. Thomas Goss and Abigail Wade. This Samuel migrated up to Oxford County, Maine and lived his life there raising a large family.
In the map below from Google, you can see where Bethel is to Rumford.
Portion of Oxford County, Maine
–Samuel Goss was born 16 October 1754 in Bolton, Massachusetts. He died in Bethel, Oxford, Maine. Pinning his death date down is hard. He is buried in the Dunn-Morton Cemetery (East B. Hill) in Andover, Oxford, Maine but there doesn’t appear to be a tombstone for him. Lucretia his wife has a stone but it is difficult to read at FAG. I have not found a probate/estate file for him either.
Samuel appears in the in the 1790 Samuel is in Sadbury, Canada, York, Maine. “Settlement Adj. Sadbury.” Known as Sudbury. It was later renamed to Bethel. In 1800 and 1810 he is in Rumford, Maine.
Samuel Goss married Lucretia Howe 7 March 1780 in Bolton, Worchester, Massachusetts. Lucretia Howe was born 4 October 1761 in Bolton and died 16 August 1845 in Bethel. Se is also buried in the Dunn-Morton Cemetery in Andover. Lucretia is the daughter of Phineas Howe and Experience Pollard. Her sister is Betsey Howe wife of Gustavus A. Goss, son of Ebenezer H. Goss, brother to Samuel. Find A Grave has them buried in the Surplus Cemetery in Andover which is another name for Dunn-Morton.
Source: Howe Genealogies – This Volume contains the Genealogy of John Howe of Sudbury and Marlborough, by Daniel Wait Howe, 1929, page 110-111. This covers Phineas Howe and Experience Pollard’s family and show Lucretia and the children and on the 2nd page Betty as well who married Gustavus A. Goss son of brother Ebenezer H. Goss.
Samuel Goss was an early settler in Bethel, on the farm afterwards owned by Richard Estes. He afterward removed to what is known as Red Hill, in Rumford. He was possessed of fine real estate in Massachusetts, left him by his father, Rev. Thomas Goss, which he exchanged for wild, eastern lands. He was not brought up to labor, and was not a business man, and so the transaction proved his financial ruin. It also affected his sons, his male heirs being the legatees according to the terms of his father’s will, after he had his maintenance out of the property. One of his sons, Abial Goss, settled in Cambridge, Mass., and became quite wealthy. He was a carpenter and contractor. (page 435).
Goss – SAMUEL Goss, son of Rev. Thomas Goss of Bolton, Mass., born October 16, 1754, married Lucretia, oldest daughter of Phineas Howe of Berlin, and was an early settler in Bethel. He lived on the south side of the river near the Rumford line, and after a few years he moved to Red Hill in Rumford. He returned to Bethel in his old age, and died at the residence of his son, Thomas Goss. (page 541). This excerpt continues with the children and I have incorporated the information into the children’s information below.

The Children of Samuel Goss and Lucretia Howe:
–Abigail Goss was born 14, April 1781 in Bolton per Bolton Vitals records. She died June 1860 in Milan, Coos, New Hampshire.
Abigail Goss married to Moses Gammon of Paris, Maine. Moses Jr. was born about 1780 in Massachusetts and died about or after 1860 in Milan, Coos, New Hampshire. This Moses was the son of Moses Gammon Sr. and Silence 1745 to 1820. His father Moses was born 1735 in Massachusetts and died 16 May 1835 in Hebron, Oxford, Maine. The father is buried n the Richville Cemetery in Oxford Co., Maine. Find A Grave has a tombstone (difficult to read) for him.
Here is a description of his Revolutionary War service.
Moses Gammon born about 1750, served in the Continental Army and was at Valley Forge. He was pensioned under Act of Congress of March 18, 1818, under certificate No. 7989. In 1819, he was living in Hebron. He stated in an affidavit made in court, June 15, 1820 that he served in “Capt. Joseph Brown’s Company of Colonel Timothy Bigelow’s Regiment of the Massachusetts Line on the Continental Establishment,” and that he was 70 years old; his wife Silence, was 75, and daughter, Elay 35 “a bill of expenses by reason of fits and derangement.” Gammon had also served in Col. Edmond Phinney’s 31st Regiment of Foot. He appears to have lived on Philips Gore some doze or more years. He died on Allen Hill, Oxford, at the home of his son, Moses, May 16, 1835, “aged 85.”

Son Moses Gammon appears in the 1850 U.S. Census living in Oxford, Oxford, Maine. He is a Teamster with a Trucking Service. He is 70 years old, birth year 1780 in Massachusetts. With him is Abby Gammon age 67.
In the 1860 U.S. Census Moses Gammon is listed living in Milan, Coos, New Hampshire. He is 80 years old birth year 1780, he is a farmer with $500 Real Estate and $200 personal. With him is Abigail Gammon age 80. Isaac Ellinwood age 38 and Columbia Ellenwood age 31. Isaac is listed a labour.
I know of at least two of children Moses Jr. and Abigail had:
Sophia Whitney Gammon born 11 June 1810 in Oxford, Maine. Sophia married a Harvey T. Dunham 12 May 1844 in Turner, Androscoggin, Maine. Sophia and Harvey appear in the 1850 Census living in Hebron, Maine. They again appear in the 1860 Census living in Hebron. With them are James Donham (Dunham) age 85, Cynthia Donham age 79. Harvey is 53, Sophia is 46. Frances M. is 13, Mary L is 11, Lorenzo H. is 8, George W. is 7 and a Sarah J age 15. Harvey has $1500 for real estate and $560 for person. They are also in the 1870 and 1880 U.S. Census in Hebron.
William Gammon was born 8 March 1812 in Buckfield, Oxford, Maine and died 12 April 1883 in Rock County, Wisconsin. He married Phebe Ann. William appears in the 1860 Census in Portland, Cumberland, Maine as a truckman. With him are Phoebe age 37, Ralf H. age 18, George age 13, Samuel age 8, Loise E. age 5 and John C. age 2. In 1870 William is listed as living in Center, Rock, Wisconsin. He is 58 years old a farmer and has $1000 in personal estate. With him is Phebe age 48, Samuel age 18, Louis age 15, John age 12 and Edith age 2.
William Gammon has a Civil war card and pension file: Service E1, ME LA. Phebe A. is listed on the card as Widow. 1880 Mch 22, #354.154 – Certificate 294387. 1884 May 31, widow #316,171, Certificate 353,619, Wisc. Source: Civil War Pension Index: General Index to Pension Files 1861 to 1934.
William Gammon and Phebe are buried n Oak Hill Cemetery in Janesville, Rock Co., Wisconsin. Phebe’s maiden name is listed as Chamberlain at FAG. She was born 6 April 1825 in Waterford, Oxford, Maine and died 17 September 1913 in Janesville.
Other children of Abigail and Moses might be: Phebe, Roxanna, Abiel, Lucretia, Experience, Jane, Daniel and Sylvenus. I have not researched them at this time.
–Charlotte Goss about 1783 in Bolton. She died 26 April 1873 in Norway, Oxford, Maine. Charlotte married a Joseph Small of Norway. He was born 10 May 1773 in Maine and died 3 September 1848 in Norway. They are buried in the Norway Center Cemetery in Norway, Maine.
Charlotte appears in the 1850 Census living in Norway, Oxford, Maine. She is 67 years old, birth year 1783 in Maine. She is living with a Henry S. Small age 27 farmer and Hannah M. age 21, Isaac N. age 20, then Charlotte age 67, Henrietta age 1 and a Benj. C. Gurney, age 19 farmer.
In the 1860 U.S. Census Charlotte is living in Norway with Isaac N. Small age 29 a house carpenter. With him is Lois D. Small age 27, Housekeeper, Laura A. Small age 7, Clara E. Small age 5, and Charlotte Small age 76.

–Clarissa Goss was born about 1785 probably in Oxford Co., Maine.
Her father Samuel Goss is difficult to pin down before 1790, but he appears in the 1790 Sadbury-Canada (Bethel) by this date per the U.S. Census. By 1800 he is in Rumford, Maine. Several of the History books I have cited have Clarissa marrying to a Silas Gray and having a son named Silas A. Gray.
Trying to figure out what happened to Clarissa has been difficult. You would think that the name Silas Gray would be easy to find and follow, but it turns out that there are many Silas Grays and it is very confusing for they are not of the same family but other Gray lines.
There is a Silas Gray born 25 December 1793 in Pelham, Hampshire, Massachusetts. This man is about the right age for marrying Clarissa Goss. Hampshire County covered a large area of Massachusetts at this time, about the whole western side of it.
This Silas Gray’s parents were Justice or Justus Gray and Lucy Seekens and other spellings. Justus was born 18 February 1772 in Belchertown, Hampshire, Massachusetts and died 5 April 1840 in Springfield, Madison, New York. Lucy was born 1774 in Massachusetts and died 20 March 1858 in Smithfield, Madison, New York. Justus’ parents married 1 March 1792 in Deerfield, Massachusetts.
Justice/Justus’s parents were Adam Clark Gray 1743 to 1819 and Eunice Clough 1750 to 1829. Adam was born 28 June 1743 in Hillsboro, Hillsborough, New Hampshire. He died 4 September 1819. His wife Eunice was born 29 August 1750 in Stafford, Tolland, Connecticut. She died 27 September 1829 in Springfield, Otsego, NY. They are buried in the Middle Village Cemetery in Springfield.
Adam’s father was William Gray and his mother was Jean (Adams) Clark both were born in Ireland. This family from William Gray is very carefully tended by researchers. My goals was to show that this Silas Gray was of Irish descent and his lineage in order to separate him out from the other Silas Grays.
Other researchers believe that a Silas Gray born 25 December 1793 in Pelham, son of Justus and Lucy married Eunice Woodward in 1815 in possibly New York City and they had Eunice 1819-1890 and Byron W. b. 1825. The location of the marriage is not correct, there is Norfolk, Massachusetts but no New York in Massachusetts.
Eunice Woodward might be Clarissa Eunice Woodward. Born about 1795 in either New York or Norfolk, MA. She died in Otsego Co., New York before 1827.
The daughter Eunice married Henry H. Davy. She was born 21 October 1818 and died 17 February 1890. She is buried in the Springfield Cemetery in Otsego Co., New York. Henry was born 21 August 1813 and died 25 June 1880 in Springfield, Otsego, New York. He is also buried in the Springfield Cemetery.
The son Bryon Gray was born about 1825 in Otsego Co., New York, he probably died in Illinois. He married Clarissa F. Dean born 1823. He is in the 1855 census listed below.
Possible Source: Gray genealogy: being a genealogical record and history of the descendants of John Gray, of Beverly Mass., by Raymond Marcius Dennison, 1887. This book does present information about a Silas Gray who lived in New York and his wife was Sally and he had daughters Peggy and Cady. WikiTree has some interesting information about this Silas Gray: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Gray-552
A Silas Gray married a second time to a Clarissa Kinney born 1793 per other researchers. They married in 1827 and had Silas A. born 1835. This does not agree with Clarissa Goss being born 1785. This means there is an 8 year difference between the two women one born in Maine the other in Massachusetts. I am not confident about this Clarissa so please be careful.
In the 1850 U.S. Federal Census there is a Silas Gray in Springfield, Otseqo, New York age 56 with $4900 born in Mass. With him is a Clarissa age 56 born Mass, Silas Gray J. age 15 born N.Y. With them is an Isaac Woodward age 86 born Conn, Sally Hall age 43 born New York, Sophia Vader age 36 born NY, Catherine Vader age 7 born NY, Richard Genter age 22 laborer, born NY. Notice it is the initial for Silas age 15 is J, not A.
There is a 1855 New York State Census that has a Clarissa Gray born 1793 age 62 living in Springfield, Otsego, New York. The Head of the family is Silas Gray age 61 male born Massachusetts. Below him is Clarissa Gray age 62 wife, born Mass. Then we have Silas A. Gray age 20, son born Otsego. Then we have Sally Ball age 50, “home,” born Otsego. Rosina Walter age 18 hired girl, born Otsego, James Jones age 20 hired man born England, Michael Jones 18 hired man, born England, Roby {Flint] age 21 male, hired and Martha Flint age 17 hired girl.
Below them by 2 houses is the family of a Bryon W. Gray age 30 with a Clarissa F. Gray age 32, Clarissa Deun/Dean age 66, Joshua A. L. Gray age 1, Leilkhe C. Gray age 3/12. This is a possible son.
In the 1860 U.S. Federal Census for Evans, Marshall, Illinois, a Silas Gray age 25 (born 1835), landlord $4000 real and $350 personal estate, born N.Y. With him is M. Jane age 26, Ella age 4, Sarah Bolle age 51, servant, Mary Hawley, servant age 21, Isaac Vaughn, Carpenter $500 born Ohio, Jas. Barton age 30 farmer $1500 real and $1000 personal born N.Y. L. Ludington age 25 merchant $1000 born N.Y., H. Judson Merchant $1000 personal born N.Y., O.L. Harrison age 25, Blacksmith $200 born Ohio, R. I. Irwin age 30 lawyer $500 real and $1500 personal born KY, Marg. Irwin age 1 born KY, Marge age 2 born Illinois. The last is Silas Gray age 66 born about 1794 in Massachusetts, gentlemen with $3000 personal estate. I think the gentlemen Silas Gray is the one we are tracking and the 1860 census implies that Clarissa has died. The M. Jane may be Mary Jane Kinne.
Here is another source that might be of help: https://wc.rootsweb.com/trees/218958/I33948/william-gray/individual
Well, this is certainly a puzzle and I can’t say I have all the facts correct or I have the correct Silas Gray. I have not done deeds, estates or cemetery records and flushed out the children. Things are not right and this family is not done. So please be careful.
-Sarah Goss was born 9 January 1790 in Rumford, Oxford, Maine. She died 16 November 1879 in Norway, Oxford, Maine. She married Jeremiah Hobbs of Norway. Jeremiah was born about 1783 in Maine. They are in Pennifield, Charlotte Co., New Brunswick and he is a farmer. With him are Elizabeth age 63, James age 23, Hannah age 20, Mary age 18 and a David Claron age 8. They are all born in the United States.
Summary: Samuel’s family was a challenge and it is still not done. Online sources are thin and it makes it difficult when you cannot access deeds, estates, marriage and burial records that could help to clarify these families. I have also not studied some of the children which might make a better picture of these families. Clarrisa Goss Gray is a puzzle and I think there is a big error given by the history books. I can see that it will take a lot more to figure out what happened. Abiel Goss’s life is sad, he died alone for all his children had passed and his wife by his death. Learning more about his estate would be very interesting. I am not familiar with Maine Genealogy and I would have to buff up on Oxford County history to learn more about the area. Please be careful with the above information.
In the next post, I move on to write about three daughters of the Rev. Thomas Goss and Abigail Wade. Their daughters: Mary Goss who married Simeon Hemmenway, Elizabeth Goss who married David Newhall and Salome who married Aaron Moore.
