Eli Seward and Eleanor Earle, their children

Eli and Eleanor Seward had a large family of about 10 children and each one of them went on to have large families. Both of these individuals lived before the 1850 census so it is difficult to research their children and it is very possible that mistakes will be made. I am always open to additional information for genealogy is always evolving.

I will attempt to share what I know in the following but be advised that the research is not done on these families.  I will not go to deep into the descendants but that does not mean I don’t have information.

First, let us get a little oriented regarding Coshocton Co. Ohio which is next to Knox Co., a county I know well with my Spracklin research and I believe I drove through this county in search of Kellers.

Coshocton Co. Ohio and how it fits into Ohio

A James Chapin obtained a Patent Pre-1908 at the Land Office in Zanesville for 40 acres:  James Chapin, Zanesville, #11787, Acres 40, Signature Yes, Issued 1 Sep 1838, 3 Stat.566, Act 24 Apr 1820, Sales-Cash, Land: 1 SWSW US Military Survey No. 5 N 9 W 24.

The above Patent is dated 1838 but something else happened on 21 Apr 1835 regarding this same piece of land #5439.  There is also a reference to 20 August 1823 for this land #200.  Perhaps a visit to the BML records to get a listing for his land patents would be a good idea.

Once again we find them living in Perry, Coshocton, Ohio in the 1840 U.S. Federal Census.

Parmelia Seward was born 17 July 1817 in Luzerne Co., Pennsylvania. Parmelia married a Joseph Howell 19 February 1937 in Coshocton, Ohio. His parents are John Howell (1767-1853) and Elizabeth Bonham (1775-1858) and he is a brother to John William Howell who married Phoebe.

In the 1850 U.S. Federal Census we find Joseph Howell age 37, with Parmelia age 31. They have James W. age 9, Sarah age 6, Eli age 3, William age 1 an Elizabeth Hayes age 18 with them in Washington, Coshocton, Ohio.  This census is on two pages.

Moving forward to 1860 we find in the census Joseph Howell with Permillia, James, Sarah, Eli, Samuel, Edmond, William, Moreca, John and Ellen age 2/12. All born in Ohio. They are in Washington Twp. still.

In 1870 the census reads Joseph (59) farmer 2000,575, Vermelia (54), Sarah (25), Samuel (19), Joseph (17), Wilbert (15), Maria (15), Ellen (11) and John (9). They are in Washngton Twp., Coshocton Co., Ohio.

In 1880 they are still in Washington, Coshocton, Ohio. The family consists of Joseph (68) farming, Permelia (68), Sarah (30), Samuel (23) farming. Wilber age (21) a school teacher, Candas age 22 School teacher, Ella age 20 and Frank age 20. Below him are John Howell, Harvey, Spencer and Sophia.

In 1900 the U.S. Federal Census has Permelia age 82 widowed (July 1817) living with her son Samuel E. age 48 (Dec 1851) single. Sarah is living with her and listed as Sister, age 56 (July 1842). A Charles Garret is a servant, age 14 born Aug 1885.

Parmelia and Joseph Howell had these children: James W. (1841 –   ), Sarah (1844-1927), Eli (1847 – 1932 in Los Angeles?), William F. (1848-1857), Samuel E. (1850-1929), Joseph Edmond (1853 – 1900 in Iowa?), Wilbur (1855 – after 1940 in Iowa), Candace Maria (1857-1930), John Franklin (1859 – after 1940 in Iowa), Ellen Howell (unknown).

Parmelia Howell died 19 May 1907 and is buried in the Chalfant Cemetery in Wakatomika, Coshocton, Ohio. Her husband Joseph Howell died 8 Nov 1885 and is also buried in this cemetery.

It is probably a good idea to go to the History of Coshocton County, Ohio, It’s Past and Present 1740-1881, Compiled by N.N. Hill, Jr. in 1881. I found some interesting mention of Eli and other Sewards. I would also search for some of the surnames about especially the daughters who married and see what comes up. This book is available at Internet Archive for viewing, searching and downloading. Do the searching before you download a lot easier.

Remember that this is a summary of the children of Eli and Eleanor Seward. It still needs a great deal more work. I am also open to corrections and discussions about anyone of these individuals. Genealogy is always evolving.
